The annual President’s Holiday Dinner showcases Cal State San Bernardino’s accomplishments and also honors supporters, donors and its Philanthropic Foundation Board of Directors.

At this year’s event, held at the Mission Inn in Riverside on Nov. 30, university President Tomás D. Morales honored retired school teacher, longtime university friend and philanthropist Shelby Obershaw, Redlands educator Ingeborg Schuler and community leader Terrance L. Stone.

Shelby Obershaw, along with her late husband, Charles, has contributed in numerous ways to CSUSB’s mission, including gifts to endow scholarships in the university’s Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration, the James R. Watson and Judy Rodriguez Watson College of Education, and the Department of Athletics, supporting between 13 and 17 students each year. The dining commons in Santos Manuel Student Union East is named after them.

In January 2017, the Obershaws gave $1 million to establish the Charles and Shelby Obershaw Endowment for Student Success, a fund that supports the social and academic success of students in CSUSB’s Educational Opportunity Program’s Renaissance Scholar program, the DEN Food Pantry and the entrepreneurship program in the Jack H. Brown College.

In recognition of this gift, the university renamed the DEN Food Pantry. It is now officially called the Obershaw DEN.

Ingeborg Schuler retired from Redlands High School in 2008 after nearly 45 years of service to the Redlands Unified School District. She is largely credited for rejuvenating the school’s Latin curriculum. A resident of Banning, she previously served on the Banning Planning Commission.

Schuler owns an equestrian school where she provides venues, forums and resources for riders of all horse breeds to learn and participate in the sport of western dressage. She is a member of the California Western Dressage Association.

In August 2023, Schuler established an endowment at CSUSB in memory of Laverne Grace Schulz. The endowment provides four scholarships each year to journalism students. Schuler has a desire to encourage community investigative journalism as local news is rapidly disappearing.

Terrance L. Stone is the 2023 recipient of CSUSB’s President’s Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the campus upon a non-alumna/us of the university. The President’s Medal was created and presented in recognition of an individual’s extraordinary achievements to a field, profession or our nation, and/or to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the wellbeing of others. The recipients have not attended and/or are not graduates of CSUSB.

Stone is the founder and CEO of Young Visionaries Youth Leadership Academy (YVYLA). A national- and state-certified gang intervention and prevention specialist, Stone has reached more than 185,000 at-risk youth through YVYLA. He has helped defuse conflicts between gangs and has created an award-winning workforce development program that provides training and jobs for young people.

Stone is also the president of Terrance Stone School and Community Consulting and president of The Southern California Black Chamber of Commerce High Desert Chapter.
