SBVC Day of Dance

They Danced all Day! The SBVC Arts and Humanities Department presented their first Day of Dance on Saturday, December 17th, 2022 from 8am to 5pm. It was a successful free event offered to intermediate to advanced dance students living in the Inland Empire. Students from Arroyo Valley High School, San Bernardino Valley College, Chaffey College and various dance studios from throughout the Inland Empire attended.
Dancers had the opportunity to take class with distinguished choreographer Lula Washington of Lula Washington Dance Theatre and SBVC dance faculty Maura Townsend, artistic director of Maura Townsend Dance Project and Temria Airmet, artistic director of Temria Dance Haus.
Classes started at 9:00am with pilates/modern dance warm up taught by Maura Townsend, who is also a Lula Washington Dance Theatre Alumnus. Immediately following, dancers were ready for technique with Lula Washington. Lunchtime featured a panel discussion and Q&A with Dance industry professionals ranging from Dance Educators to performers.
Diane Bonds talked about a career as a High School Dance Educator, Maura Townsend talked about her experience as a College Dance educator, Jamie Sachs, Artistic Director of Inland Empire Contemporary Ballet spoke on the topic of a dance studio owner and director, and Colleen Melhuish, professional dancer, talked to the student dancers about what a professional dancer in film, TV and concert dance entails.
After lunch Temria Airmet gave a fun Jazz class which prepared the dancers for the last part of the day, repertory class with Lula Washington.
The dancers finished the day full of new and exciting information about their craft in the dance industry. We look forward to seeing them back next year!
