Cal Poly Cross Country Claims Victory During First Action of Season
Finishing in the top spot in their first action of the season, the Cal Poly Pomona men’s cross country team took first-place in the Kim Duyst Cross Country Invitational hosted by Stanislaus State recently
The Broncos tallied the top four finishers, led by Ruben Dominguez and Christian Rodriguez who tied with the fastest time at 25:54.5. Following them was Devon Reed in third at 26:10.1 and Grant Stromberg in fourth with a time of 26:14.8.
CPP finished with 17 points in the team score, beating out CCAA opponents Cal State San Marcos (50), Cal State East Bay (76), Stanislaus State (99) and San Francisco State (120).
The Broncos will prepare for the UC Riverside Invite on Saturday, September 16.
Women’s Cross Country
The Cal Poly Pomona women’s cross country team started the 2017 campaign on a high note, claiming first-place in Stanislaus State’s Kim Duyst Cross Country Invitational recently.
The Broncos finished with four runners in the top seven spots with senior Lorraine Fernandez finishing in first with a time of 22.15.3, barely ahead of teammate Casey Monoszlay in second at 22:15.4.
Behind them was Elizabeth Hernandez in sixth (22:25.0), freshman Samantha Barajas in seventh, and Nichelle Jackson in 12th with a time of 23:04.0.
CPP tallied a team score of 28, finishing ahead of Cal State San Marcos who took second with a score of 50 and Stanislaus State in third with a score of 69.
The Broncos will prepare for the UC Riverside Invite on Saturday, September 16.
Volleyball
The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball picked up their first win of the season in a four-set victory (25-18. 21-25, 25-16, 26-24) over Dixie State as they split the final day of the Otter Classic.
The Broncos (1-3) were led by Andrea Bosnic who tallied a high of 20 kills with a .333 hitting percentage. Jenna Goldsberry continued to perform well, totaling nine kills while Alexandra Gresham finished the night with eight kills.
Holding a slight advantage at 12-11 in the opening set, the Broncos used a 9-3 run to pull away from the Trailblazers and take the first set 25-18.
Offensively, the Broncos out hit Dixie State with a hitting percentage of .213 compared to only .164.
Dixie State had a strong outing in the second set, tying the match at one set a piece as they edged out the Broncos 25-21.
Once again, the third set started out close with each team trading points. Ahead 9-7, the Broncos rattled off a 10-3 run to secure the set and take the lead for the remainder of the match.
Desi Martin added seven kills for CPP while newcomer Ally Wilder also finished with seven kills off of 13 swings with zero errors. Alina Smith and Kay Powell shared time at the setter spot, collecting 22 and 23 assists respectively.
Broncos put up a strong fight in game two, losing to CSU Monterey Bay in a non-CCAA match 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-18). Martin led the second match with eight kills followed by Bosnic with seven and Goldsberry and Gresham each with six.
Samantha Figueroa finished with 20 or more digs in both matches, claiming 21 against Dixie State before finishing the day with 20 vs the Otters.
