Community members are invited to join the City of Long Beach as it celebrates the grand reopening of the Scherer Park Community Center. The special event will include remarks by Mayor Rex Richardson, Eighth District Councilmember Al Austin II and the Departments of Parks, Recreation and Marine and Public Works, as well as a ceremonial ribbon cutting and public access to the renovated community center. The celebration will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, at Scherer Park (4600 Long Beach Blvd.).

“I am thrilled to see the renovation complete at Scherer Park,” said Mayor Rex Richardson. “This park is a hub for recreation programs for the North Long Beach and Bixby Knolls communities, and the improvements made to the community center will enhance the space for after school programming and summer camp access while also making it more energy efficient.”

The Scherer Park Community Center Project included new energy efficient windows, doors, electrical, lighting, roof and HVAC improvements. The center also received new paint, graphics and signage. The park restrooms received new stall partitions, interior and exterior lighting for enhanced safety, new louvers for improved air circulation, and a new drinking fountain. The renovations to both the center, park restrooms and parking lot improved ADA accessibility with the addition of more accessible parking and improved paths of travel around the community center.

“After three years of community input, planning, design and construction, I am excited to welcome residents to this newly renovated community center,” said Eighth District Councilmember Al Austin II. “The new finishes and improved ADA access features will improve visitor’s experience and enjoyment of this center for decades to come.”

The $2.2 million project was largely funded by Long Beach Measure A and California Assembly Bill 32 with additional support from the City’s Elevate ‘28 Infrastructure Investment Plan. The funding was approved by the Long Beach City Council in 2022 and 2023.

In spring 2023, the City hosted four community meetings to solicit ideas and garner input for future park developments.
