Rep. Pete Aguilar Defends Reproductive Freedom
Rep. Pete Aguilar marked two years since the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decision, which overturned the constitutional right to an abortion guaranteed by Roe v. Wade.
One in three American women now live under an abortion ban and one in five have traveled out of state to seek abortion care. In 2023, the number of women traveling to California from other states to receive abortion care more than doubled.
“In the last two years, Extreme MAGA Republicans have made it clear that they will not stop at Roe,” said Rep. Pete Aguilar. “We will not stand by as they continue their push for a national abortion ban, ending IVF as we know it and rolling back access to safe and legal contraception. It is unthinkable that in the United States, women today have fewer rights than their mothers and grandmothers. I will continue advocating on behalf of the women in the Inland Empire, and I will fight to restore reproductive freedom as the law of the land.”
“As we mark two years since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and ended federal protections for abortion, it’s clear that our rights are still under attack, even here in California. It’s critical that we continue to do the work to keep California a reproductive freedom state and restore reproductive rights for the rest of the nation,” said Jon Dunn, CEO and President of Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties.
“The attempt to gut reproductive health care is yet another way to exert control and foster fear in communities who have already been made vulnerable by racist systems and policies,” said Elena Fernandez, Chief Programs Officer at St. John’s Community Health. “Having access to a full range of reproductive healthcare services – including birth control and abortion – is a basic right that all community health centers should support and work to protect.”
In January, Rep. Pete Aguilar joined an amicus brief to urge the Supreme Court to allow mifepristone, an FDA-approved abortion pill, to remain accessible across the country.
Rep. Pete Aguilar has also supported legislation to protect access to abortion, birth control and IVF federally.
Rep. Aguilar serves as Chair of the House Democratic Caucus and as a member of the House Committee on Appropriations.
